The Baltimore Orioles are often regarded by many to be one of the best teams of the American League (AL) in Major League Baseball (MLB). Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, United States, this team is a three-time World Series Champion. Moreover, they have also won the AL East Division championship 10 times so far and achieved AL pennants seven times.

The team currently plays their home games at the Oriole Park at Camden Yards and is currently owned by Peter Angeles. His son, John P. Angles serves as the president. Mike Elias and Brandon Hyde serve as general managers and manager of the team.

The Oriole Bird is the official mascot for the Baltimore Orioles team in Major League Baseball (MLB) as per the MLB official site.

The Oriole Bird’s History

The Oriole Bird serves as the mascot for the Baltimore Orioles and has a funny and interesting history behind him. Although the team had been playing baseball since 1954, it took 25 years for the team to finally reveal a mascot for them. John.J. Krownapple, a Howard County Elementary school teacher, Steven Butz, a neuropsychologist and Lyle McCollum, an experienced mascot performer are notable for bringing the character of the bird alive for the fans over the years as per Sportsmascots.

The Oriole Bird first hatched out of a giant egg at Memorial Stadium on April 6, 1979, as per the MLB official site. He was then declared as the official mascot for the team. He is a pretty looking bird and is black in color with an orange beak and chest. The Oriole Bird has since then been entertaining fans throughout the seasons in the league. He can be seen at the Oriole Park at Camden Yards and has also appeared in many areas across Baltimore. He resides in The Bird Room as per Sportsmascots. His archenemy is Ace, the mascot for the Toronto Blue Jays as being fellow birds, they always compete to become #1 in the AL East Division. Notably, the Oriole Bird has also starred in the TV show House of Cards on Netflix, and in the film Head of State (2003) alongside Chris Rock. He also appears at multiple hospital events and charity programs. He became a Mascot Hall of Famer in 2019 as per Mascot Hall of Fame.

The Oriole Bird has a typical lifestyle. He wakes up at 4 am, he starts making his various appearances from 5:30 am to 3:30 pm. He takes a break at 3:30 pm. Then he reaches the Oriole Park at Cam Yards at 4:30 pm and prepares for the team’s games. He finishes his dinner and changes into his costume by 5:15 pm-6:15 pm. Then, he makes alternate appearances with the opponent mascot before and after the game from 6:15 pm-9:45 pm. Finally, he returns home at 10 pm.

The Oriole Bird’s Funny Incidents-

A funny thing that The Oriole Bird always does is dance during the games. Notably, he danced alongside a masked luchador during a Baltimore Orioles game on April 24, 2015. The crowd also joined him and the luchador in dancing as per MLB on YouTube.

In an Interview with Brendan McNamara of ABC2 on Opening Day in 2017, The Oriole Bird hilariously shared his feelings through his whistlings as per WMAR-2 News on YouTube. However, as soon as he heard that the Toronto Blue Jays were coming with their mascot bird, he was disappointed and indicated that he would beat that bird up. The interviewer finally had to admit that it was a tough interview with lots of whistling.

On April 26, 2014, while Nick Markakis of the Baltimore Orioles was being interviewed after his walk-off single as per MLB on YouTube, The Oriole Bird was in the background waving the flag, when somebody just slammed a plate of pie into his face, which caused him to fall. However, he was up on his feet soon enough and went back to his antics with half his face filled with pie.
