It was not a season to write home about for veteran outfielder Ben Gamel in 2024. The 32-year-old from Neptune Beach, Florida was limited to only 38 MLB games last season, posting a .247 batting average with a home run and 4 RBIs split between the New York Mets and Houston Astros.
Although his counting stats leave something to be desired, Ben Gamel was a solid on-base contributor for the Houston Astros before fracturing his left fibula on Sept. 14 while crashing into a wall after making a catch. In 20 games with Houston, Gamel posted a .739 OPS with 15 hits.
He may not be much in terms of power-hitting. However, he is a solid defender with the ability to get on base. At this point of his career, he may need to settle on a Minor League deal, however, he could be a worthy depth piece for some clubs looking to add to their outfield core.
Here's a closer look at 3 potential landing spots for Ben Gamel in free agency
#1 - Houston Astros
The Houston Astros might be the perfect spot for Gamel. Not only did he perform well before his season-ending injury, but he is a left-handed hitting outfielder, which is something that the team has been looking for all offseason. Another positive when it comes to Ben Gamel is the fact that he could be signed for a team-friendly contract, making him an easy deal to add to the roster for 2025.
The Astros traded away All-Star Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs and have yet to add any new outfielders in free agency. Gamel could be a low-cost signing and a solid on-base contributor at the bottom of the order for Houston.
#2 - Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals will enter 2025 as one of the top contenders in the American League. However, the club could use some additional depth in the outfield. The Royals had several outfielders from 2024 hit unrestricted free agency, including Tommy Pham and Robbie Grossman. While Ben Gamel may not have the home run upside of either player, his ability to get on base could help the club score runs.
#3 - Los Angeles Angels
The Los Angeles Angels have done a tremendous job revamping their roster with proven, veteran talent this offseason. The club has added several players heading into 2025, including Jorge Soler, Travis d'Arnaud and Yusei Kikuchi to name a few. Gamel could be another low-risk option for the Angels, especially if they are looking to move Mike Trout out of the outfield to help him stay healthy.
Since his career started in 2016, Gamel has played for eight teams.
