Ben Hess is an American right-handed pitcher who has been plying his trade with the University of Alabama for the last three seasons. He began his high school baseball journey at Charleston High School where he was regarded as the No.1 pitcher in the state of Illinois. Hess guided his school to a regional championship in 2019 and went 6-3 with a 2.98 ERA in 47 innings in his sophomore year. Hess was also tabbed as the nation’s top-ranked player in the state of Illinois but went undrafted in 2021 due to signability concerns.
Hess began his collegiate baseball journey with Alabama Crimson Tide where he struggled to make an impact in his rookie campaign. As a freshman in 2022, Hess made 11 appearances and posted a 4.54 ERA, striking out 50 batters and allowing six home runs. Then in 2023 as a sophomore, the Charleston native put up a 3.2 ERA and recorded 49 strikeouts before being sidelined with a season-ending injury for the rest of the season. In 2024 as a junior, Hess pitched the entire season and finished the campaign with 106 strikeouts. He saw his ERA multiply to 5.80 in 68 innings and was ranked eighth in the SEC for strikeouts. Hess is arguably one of the top pitchers in the 2024 MLB Draft class but no mock drafts have him going in the first round.
