This week, thousands of fans descended on Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series. Although most college-aged fans enjoyed a weekend of sun and baseball, one young woman came away from the affair rather disgruntled.
The fan, identified as Anna, uploaded a TikTok video in which she ripped into ESPN for airing a 20-second clip of her enjoying an ice cream cone during a game at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
"NEW: Woman shreds ESPN for "s**ualizing" her by showing her eating ice cream on television for ~20 seconds. ESPN hires the h*rniest cameramen. The clip ended up going viral, leading many people to compare her to the "Hawk Tuah" girl. "It was a 20-second segment of just us licking our ice cream. Twenty seconds dedicated to, with commentary, just us eating our ice cream. We all knew what direction that video was gonna head in"And low and behold, the creeps of TikTok got a hold of it because we woke up getting compared to the Hawk Tuah girl"" - Collin Rugg
While Annie was upset at ESPN for airing the bit, her qualms lay with those who shared the suggestive video on TikTok. In an upload on her account, .anniej4, the young fan lambasted the crude commentary she saw, and went on to claim that it is "beyond evident that women aren't welcome in the sports world."
Annie went on to claim that some commenters were even comparing her to the infamous "Hawk Tuah Girl", a fellow college student who has recently gone viral after sharing some rather heinous details on her sexual preferences.
The 2024 College World Series was won by Tennessee, the number-one-ranked team. It took the Volunteers three games to beat Texas A&M to capture their first College World Series title ever.
Young woman at College World Series evokes some solid points
Although the subsequent commentary has been nothing short of outrageous, the original call by ESPN to focus on the two young girls eating ice cream is no less questionable. In her video response to the affair, Annie continued:
"Their ambiguity is exactly what protects them, and that's the problem... As if I was doing something wrong trying to avoid heat exhaustion"
Indeed, it was a very bizarre sequence of events, but at least Annie, in her own way, has called out those who need to be held accountable for this situation.
