The Boston Red Sox announced on Sunday that infielder Bobby Dalbec has been designated for assignment. The veteran infielder has been with the team since being picked in the 2016 MLB draft and showed early signs of potential. However, more than four seasons after his MLB debut, he has failed to make a lasting impression with the majority of his time spent in the minors.
Bobby Dalbec was Boston's primary first baseman during the 2020 pandemic-affected season. In just 92 at-bats, he recorded eight home runs batting at .263 and one of the few positives that year for the Red Sox as they finished fifth in the AL East. He continued that solid form in his first full season in 2021, going .240 with 78 RBIs including 25 home runs in 133 games.
However, things have gone downhill since then. A .215-hitting 2022 season caused the corner infielder to lose his place in the lineup. His last two seasons have mostly been at Worchester where he has excelled. In 85 games for the Triple-A team, Dalbec has hit .255 with 64 RBIs and 19 homers. In sharp contrast, he has recorded .133 in 83 at-bats in the majors.
With the Red Sox looking to move on from Dalbec, here are three teams who could claim him off waivers.
3 landing spots for Bobby Dalbec after getting DFA'd by Red Sox
Colorado Rockies
There are only a few teams where Dalbec can make it to the MLB lineup without needing a minor-league stint. This includes the NL West's worst team, the Colorado Rockies, who are having a tough time at first base this season. Their season average in that position is .201. They also have a very slim infielder depth chart and adding an extra option in the former Red Sox 1B won't be a bad idea.
Milwaukee Brewers
It is surprising to think that for a team with an 82-60 record and looking to have a deep postseason run, the Brewers' first basemen are only batting at .195. Their primary 1B Rhys Hoskins has recorded 23 home runs but is 142nd among all eligible batters with a .208 average. Dalbec would be best suited for a minor-league stint with the team, aiming for a quick promotion.
Chicago Cubs
Bobby Dalbec has divided his time in the diamond both as a first and third baseman. The Cubs are in dire need of a strong at-bat in 3B, going 101-506 with 133 strikeouts all season. Isaac Paredes is the primary third baseman for the team but they have few options and need to rearrange their pieces in the infield.
