Brett Baty, the third baseman prospect for the New York Mets, suffered a right thumb injury during Tuesday's game for Triple-A Syracuse. Baty was taken out of the game due to thumb soreness and is set to undergo imaging to determine the extent of the injury.
How bad is Brett Baty’s injury?
Last September, Baty underwent surgery on the same thumb to repair a torn ligament that ended his season early. However, it is a positive sign that Baty continued his at-bat after his thumb was examined and remained in the game to run the bases. Baty has performed well in the minors, with a .400/.471/.867 slash line, two home runs, and five RBIs in four games for Syracuse.
The Mets had a strong spring with Brett Baty and he appeared to be in a good position to unseat Eduardo Escobar as the starting third baseman. However, Baty was sent to Triple-A in late camp to receive more repetitions at third base.
The Mets have had a slow start to the season, with several starters, including Escobar, struggling. Escobar returned to the starting lineup on Tuesday after sitting out the previous day with a .063/.118/.063 slash line and seven strikeouts in his first 16 at-bats of the season.
The Mets also have Mark Vientos, who has been playing first base for Syracuse. Baty has been starting at third base. Escobar remains optimistic that he will recover from his early slump and begin contributing. However, if his poor performance continues, Baty could replace him as the Mets' starting third baseman.
Baty is a promising prospect who had a strong season in the minors last year, and Mets owner Steve Cohen is known for wanting to assemble the best MLB team he can immediately. If his injury updates turn out to be positive, Baty could see Major League at bats this season.
