In 2019, Carlos Carrasco signed a new contract with the then-Cleveland Indians. He was eventually traded to the New York Mets, which is the team he currently pitches for. His contract remained the same when he joined the Mets, though.
Carrasco signed a four-year, $47 million deal in 2019, which makes this the final season of his contract. He is earning $14 million as his base salary this season.
The Mets exercised his club option last off-season, which is what has kept him in Citi Field for the time being. Next season, he will be an unrestricted free agent at the age of 37.
Carlos Carrasco struggling in 2023
Carlos Carrasco had a rough end to the season last year, something manager Buck Showalter was hyper-attuned to. This season, his velocity, which dipped last year, appears to have stayed down.
Carrasco confirmed his health to MLB.com:
“I pay attention to my velocity. I want to know where I am. This is the first game. We have more games to come, and I’ll just get them from there.”
One of his fastballs dipped to about 88 miles per hour, which made the data think it was a changeup. Carrasco said:
“Listen, we are human beings. We’re going to get tired. Not every time we’re going to throw 93-plus. A couple long innings … but other than that, everything feels nice, everything feels normal,” Carrasco said. “I just had some long innings, and pretty much that’s what happened.”
Hopefully, he can regain his arm strength and continue pitching well for the Mets.
