It wasn't the season that veteran pitcher Chad Kuhl was hoping for. The 32-year-old from Newark, Delaware, found himself as part of the lowly 2024 Chicago White Sox squad that set the modern MLB record for the most losses in a single season by posting a dismal 41-121 record.
Although things went poorly for the White Sox, the same could be said for Kuhl, who struggled across 53.1 innings before being released at the end of September. He went 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA and 54 strikeouts. Kuhl has struggled for large stretches of his career, however, he has shown promise at times, including a complete game shutout against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022.
While it may be difficult for the veteran to land a new contract this offseason, he could draw some interest from clubs on a minor league deal. Kuhl could be worth a flier for a few clubs heading into 2025 spring training, even if it's not on an MLB deal.
Here's a closer look at 3 potential landing spots for Chad Kuhl in free agency
#1, Los Angeles Angels
The Los Angeles Angels have been one of the most active clubs this offseason, adding several significant players such as Travis d'Arnaud, Yusei Kikuchi and Jorge Soler. Although the Halos' roster is rounding into form, the front office could turn to a veteran like Chad Kuhl as a depth arm to put around their star pitchers.
Kuhl might need to settle for a minor league contract and a spring training invitation. This could tempt the Los Angeles front office to take a shot on him and see what he has left in the tank. He can work as a starter and a reliever, which could increase his value to a team like Los Angeles.
#2, Toronto Blue Jays
Unlike the Los Angeles Angels, the offseason has been largely disappointing for the Toronto Blue Jays. After reportedly offering significant money to free agents such as Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, the team landed neither. This could open the door for the front office to look for low-cost depth to round out the roster. Again, bringing in a guy like Chad Kuhl on a minor league deal could be an interesting move for the Jays.
#3, Miami Marlins
The Miami Marlins are an interesting team to keep an eye on this offseason. While the team has been relatively quiet in free agency, it has been mentioned in trade rumors. Chad Kuhl could be the type of veteran that a rebuilding team such as the Marlins could look to, not only to serve in a depth role but to potentially be a trade chip if he can turn things around on the mound.
