Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, United States, the Cleveland Guardians have been successful in making their mark in Major League Baseball (MLB). The team started out as the Columbus Buckeyes, a minor league team of the Western League in 1896. They then relocated to Michigan, Detroit, United States as the Grand Rapids Furniture Makers for the remainder of the 1899 season. Finally, they returned to Cleveland again in 1900 and went through several name changes, before becoming the Cleveland Indians from 1915-2021.
The Cleveland Guardians name and their former team logos had received severe criticism for stereotyping Native Americans and on November 29, 2021, the team officially changed its name to the Cleveland Guardians. The Cleveland Guardians have been successful in winning two World Series titles, six American League (AL) champions, and five AL Central Division titles over the years. They are also notable rivals of their National League (NL) counterpart the Cincinnati Reds and host the Buckeye Series with them every season for the Ohio Cup.
Stephen Guy Vogt has taken up the reins as the new manager for the Cleveland Guardians from 2024. Being a former MLB player himself, he debuted in 2012 and represented the Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics (two stints), Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks and Atlanta Braves till 2022. During his playing career, he also became a two-time MLB All-Star player in 2015 and 2016.
Post his retirement in 2022, he transitioned to becoming a coach. He served as the bullpen and the quality control coach for the Seattle Mariners for the 2023 season. Finally, he became the manager of the Cleveland Guardians from 2024, after being chosen for the role on November 6, 2023. As a manager, he stands at a record of 92-69 in 161 games as of October 2024.
