The Colorado Rockies are being dealt a tough hand, potentially losing Brendan Rodgers for the season. Rodgers was a tremendous infielder for the team in 2022, winning the Gold Glove award for National League second basemen. News of a shoulder injury that could require surgery could derail his season. The Rockies are in enough trouble as they play in the vaunted National League West.
Rodgers made great strides offensively in 2022. He hit a solid batting average of .266 and 13 home runs. He has proven to be a solid player for the Colorado Rockies, and his youth leaves a lot of room for growth. Losing a season's worth of that growth would be a huge hurdle to overcome.
Thomas Harding was the first to report that the Colorado Rockies slugger's season was in jeopardy.
Rockies fans knew not to have high expectations for this season, but they were looking forward to seeing Rodgers' progress. Losing him for the year before the season even begins in earnest is extremely disheartening.
With the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres at the top of the division, the Colorado Rockies do not really have playoff aspirations. However, they were still hoping to be better than last season when they lost 94 games. The team did not spend big, or really at all, in free agency, putting all their hopes on the team as it was.
New York Yankees fans are hoping this injury will help them unload Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Kiner-Falefa has proven to be a solid infielder, but not up to the standards of Yankees fans. The Rockies are not exactly known for making moves like that, and could simply attempt to call one of their farm players up. Whether or not that player is MLB-ready is a different story.
If Brendan Rodgers does miss the entirety of the 2023 regular season, we may never be able to see how great a player he could have been.
What would make 2023 a successful season for the Colorado Rockies?
The playoffs do not seem to be in the cards for the Rockies in 2023, so their goal should be a winning record. Even that goal will be tough to reach for a team that has one of the weakest rosters in MLB.
If you want to grow the game in your market, you need to win games. If Rockies fans don't even think the team is trying to win, why would they bother to buy a ticket?
