Dinger is the official mascot for the Colorado Rockies in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is a purple and yellow colored anthropomorphic dinosaur, notably, a triceratops. He wears a Colorado Rockies jersey with black sneakers. His name is a slang for a “home run”.

Dinger’s History

There is an interesting reason behind the Colorado Rockies selecting triceratops as their mascot. Denver, Colorado, and its surrounding areas are notable for the discovery of several dinosaur fossils. During the construction of the Coors Field, a 7 feet and 1000 pound dinosaur fossil was discovered. This huge fossil was the head of a triceratops, which roamed the area during prehistoric times. The Colorado Rockies team management thus, got the idea for a dinosaur as a mascot.

Dinger was introduced to the audience on April 16, 1994 at Mile High Stadium. During the game, the fans were notified that a grey colored egg was discovered during the construction of the stadium. The National Guard brought the egg into the stadium. While two doctors were examining the egg, it hatched and out came Dinger, the triceratops. Thus, he was declared to be the mascot for the Colorado Rockies.

Since his introduction, Dinger has been diligently performing his duties by roaming the field and dancing during the late innings to distract the opponent team’s pitchers. He also appears before and after the games on the field. He works throughout the year as a promoter of physical fitness and literacy by visiting thousands of elementary school students in the Rocky Mountain regions. He also visits Denver Health and Children’s Hospital Colorado, where he acts out his own story for the children. He is the biggest fan of the Colorado Rockies.

After Dinger turned 20 years old, the Colorado Rockies introduced his bobblehead to honor him. They also gave away a bobblehead which showed Dinger wearing a purple Easter vest on April 20, 2014. The bobblehead showed the triceratops standing in a partial egg, indicating his hatching two decades ago and holding an Easter basket consisting of a white egg with the team logo on it. Dinger has proved to be an adorable mascot for the kids although some adults are critical of him.

Dinger’s Funny Incidents

It seemed that Dinger has “The Force” (Star Wars). On October 24, 2019, Dinger was at work in his office at the Colorado Rockies headquarters while the telephone started ringing. Despite trying to use The Force on the telephone, it didn't work and the poor Dinger had to manually handle the phone call. Later, he walked out with a lightsaber and again tried to use The Force on a bobblehead but failed. His lightsaber was totally ineffective on a car. Just when he thought he successfully lifted the shutter of a store, it was revealed that there was a personnel inside the store and it was he who lifted the shutter. Finally, he used The Force on the Coors Field and managed to light up the scoreboard and the fountains. While he was happy with his powers and dancing around, it was revealed that two Colorado Rockies personnel were behind it the whole time. The video suggests that maybe Dinger’s “The Force '' is not applicable on Earth ... .or that he doesn’t have any.

On April 6, 2023, Dinger appeared for an interview at Coors Field with Denver 7. There he entertained the interview as well as the news anchors with his antics while also informing about Dinger Day on April 30, 2023. The news anchors were entertained by him and wanted to bring him to the newsroom.
