Coors Field is the official stadium for the Colorado Rockies in Major League Baseball (MLB). It is notable for being the highest elevated MLB baseball stadium as it is located 5,200 feet above the sea level. Based in Denver, Colorado, United States, the Colorado Rockies has been using this stadium since 1995 as their home stadium.

Coors Field’s History/Coors Field Construction and Cost

The Colorado Rockies were formed in 1993 as a result of the MLB expanding into two new teams in 1991. The formation of the new team also led to plans of construction of a new baseball only stadium in Denver, Colorado, United States. Accordingly, construction of the stadium started on October 16, 1992 and the team played at Mile High Stadium until the new stadium was completed. The new stadium was opened to the public on April 26, 1995 with the first game played on the same day. Coors Brewing Company in Colorado purchased the naming rights of the stadium for $30 million and it was named Coors Field. Notably several dinosaur fossils were also discovered during the stadium’s construction, including that of a face of a triceratops. This also led to the team choosing Dinger, a triceratops as their mascot.

Coors Field is a “old school” baseball stadium. Initially, the plan was to make the stadium smaller. However, the first season of the Colorado Rockies attracted a large number of fans and therefore the plans were changed. Accordingly, the upper deck with more seats were added in the stadium. The center field bleacher area is called “The Rockpile''. It is located in the deep center field and is elevated. The climate and high elevation of Denver makes this stadium hitter friendly. It's also the first MLB stadium that has an underground heating system. The stadium underwent major renovations in 2017. They also used the land near the stadium to raise funds for improving the Denver Baseball Stadium. Coors Brewing Company also extended their naming rights deal to the stadium until 2047.

The concession stand has different features for the fans. There is a statue of Rocky Mountain. Moreover, there are also fountains, streams and pine trees behind the center field. This fountain blasts up towards the clouds if the Colorado Rockies win a game or when a team member scores a home run. The stadium also has two huge Daktronics scoreboards. The top scoreboard display is 27 by 47 feet while the second serves as the scoreboard and lineup display and measures 33 by 73 feet. A ribbon display is also present in the stadium. Notable restaurants and microbreweries like The Sandlot’s Blue Moon Brewery provide Blue Moon, a Belgian style beer made up of wheat, which is quite popular in Colorado. The stadium also has restaurants that provide Denver Dogs, Rockie Dogs, burgers, vegetarian dogs and other tasty foods. For kids, there is an arcade with video games and a lounge. The Coors Field also hasn outdoor picnic area next to the bullpens.

The field surface has been constructed by using Perennial Ryegrass. The left field is 347 feet and the left center field is 390 feet. The right field is 350 feet and the right center field is 375 feet. The center field is 415 feet and the backstop is 56 feet. The construction of Coors Field cost $300 million in 1995, which was equal to $576 million as of 2022. It was constructed by Populous.
