Burnes used to play for the Orleans Firebirds while he was attending Saint Mary's College of California. After completing college, he was drafted in the 2016 MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He was the 11th overall pick and was selected in the fourth round. He is a three-time All-Star, he won the NL Cy Young Award in 2021, and was the NL ERA leader in the same year.
