New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter was not only a star player on the field but is also a doting son. Jeter's focus and dedication toward the game is renowned.
Jeter, in many incidences, has credited his parents, Charles and Dorothy, for his success in Major League Baseball.
The All-Star once spoke about the way his parents taught him to be accountable. Speaking about his first contract and his parents teaching him respect, Jeter said in a 2017 ESPN interview:
"The first contract I've ever signed was with my parents, and they used to, before every school year, they'd map out, you know, what our grades had to be in order to play sports, our after-school programs, respect. They taught us accountability, responsibility and curfews. And, you know, I never really tried to argue with the contract, with the exception of the curfews I tried to change."
Jeter also said that his parents taught him to stay grounded:
"But, I think, you know, it taught us to stay grounded. It taught us, you know, you need to set goals and work hard at them and, you know, at the time you don't really understand it, but looking back on it, you realize that it really built the framework for success."
Jeter retired from the MLB in 2014.
Derek Jeter chose Mother's Day for his retirement ceremony
Jeter made the deliberate decision to hold the ceremony on Mother's Day in 2017, after it was revealed that the New York Yankees would retire his uniform.
The former Yankees captain had the following to say about his well-considered choice:
"My mom especially has been very supportive ever since I was younger, but not just playing baseball. It was with anything that me or my sister wanted to do where she was very supportive."
