Former shortstop Miguel Tejada spent 16 seasons in Major League Baseball and was a star player. The All-Star once admitted to faking his age in order to sign his MLB contract. He made his MLB debut with the Oakland Athletics in 1997.

Tejada told the Athletics that he was 17 when he was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 1993 but he was actually 19.

The shortstop confessed after ESPN approached him in 2008.

"I was a poor kid," Tejada said. "I wanted to sign a professional contract, and that was the only way to do it. I didn't want or mean to do anything wrong. At the time, I was two years older than they thought."

Juan Marichal brought Tejada out of the Dominican Republic, but he claimed that the Hall of Famer had nothing to do with the change in age.

"The thing is I didn't want Houston to find out from somebody else," Tejada said. "I wanted to find out just from my face. I'm a man and I'm responsible for everything. That's why I prefer to come to them and say, 'You know what? That's the way it is and we're moving forward.'"

Tejada played his last game in 2013 for the Kansas City Royals.

Miguel Tejada pleaded guilty to lying, apologized later

Tejada issued an apology to everyone shortly after pleading guilty in federal court to a misdemeanor count of lying to Congress. This was about his knowledge of a former teammate's use of performance-enhancing substances in 2013.

"I made a mistake, and now I know how serious a mistake that I made," the Dominican shortstop told reporters.
"I'm sorry to my family, to the Congress, to the Houston Astros," he said. "I apologize to the whole United States, because this country give me an opportunity to be who I am, and the last thing that I want to do is let this country down."

MLB suspended Tejada for 105 games on August 17, 2013, for breaking the league's drug policy by using amphetamines.
