The 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal shook the entire MLB, including Mark Teixeira and the New York Yankees. The Astros' unlawful sign-stealing methods were the subject of an MLB inquiry, which raised questions about whether other teams had been committing similar offenses.

Fingers were also pointed at former Yankees All-Star Mark Teixeira. However, he refuted the claims and pushed back against the cheating allegations the Bombers faced.

In a phone call with The Post in 2020, Teixeira said:

“I don’t believe any of my Yankee teammates ever broke the rules by passing along signs to hitters in real time. We would have seen it.”

Teixeira stated that teams used the "old-school method of stealing signs," but they never devised a complex system to decode messages in real-time.

"It is important for fans to know how other teams pick up on signs. This has been going on for years- the claim that “every team is cheating” is not true. ⁦@Joelsherman1 does a great job showing the difference between the Astros and the rest of MLB." - Mark Teixeira

Teixeira claimed that a select group of Yankee players, including Carlos Beltran, Alex Rodriguez, and Chris Young (as well as a select group of coaches) used the new technology as a logical advancement from a TV broadcast. This featured a single image and was, consequently, not always trained on the catcher's signs.

Teixeira added that he didn't think the system had much of an influence in any case:

"I thought personally it was BS because by the time they decoded and would get it to me [from second base], my at-bat was over or the pitcher and catcher changed the signs. They were wrong more than they were right.
"Anecdotally, I would argue with teammates, 'You are not good at this. You are trying to give signs, then you get mad at me because I am not good at it either. We are not that good at it.' How you get good at it is to decode in real time and bang on trash cans. That is way over the line."

Mark Teixeira led the American League (AL) in home runs and runs batted in (RBI) while coming in second in the voting for the Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) in 2009. He was a crucial component of the Yankees' 27th World Series victory that year.

Mark Teixeira is a 3-time All-Star

Teixeira, a three-time All-Star, holds the big league record for most games with a home run from both sides of the plate at 14. He also has five Gold Glove Awards and three Silver Slugger Awards. In MLB history, he was the seventh switch hitter to hit 400 home runs.

Mark Teixeira announced his retirement at the end of his contract with the Yankees following the 2016 season. Teixeira had at least 30 home runs and 100 RBIs every season from 2004 to 2011.
