Boston Red Sox centerfielder Jarren Duran was named the 2024 MLB All-Star Game MVP after driving home the winning runs as the American League defeated the National League 5-3 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Consequently, Duran became the fifth player to win the honor in a Red Sox uniform.
Here's a closer look at the five Red Sox players to be adjudged the MVP in an All-Star Game.
5 Red Sox stars to be named MVP in an MLB All-Star Game
#1. Carl Yastrzemski (1970)
Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski spent his 23-year Hall of Fame career in Boston with 3,419 hits and 452 home runs. "Yaz", as he was affectionately called, made 18 All-Star appearances, winning three batting titles and six Gold Gloves, and was the AL MVP in 1967.
Yastrzemski was named MVP of the MLB All-Star Game in 1970 at Riverfront Stadium, the old home of the Cincinnati Reds. He got four hits in the game and scored a run, but his team lost 6-5 in 12 innings.
#2. Roger Clemens (1986)
Roger Clemens is arguably the greatest pitcher in the history of the game, with seven ERA titles, two triple crowns and 11 All-Star appearances. Nicknamed "The Rocket", Clemens began his dominance in 1986 when he won the first of his record seven Cy Young Awards and was also named the AL MVP.
That year, the MLB All-Star Game was held at the Astrodome in Clemens' hometown of Houston. The former Red Sox pitcher produced three perfect innings, containing 21 strikes with only three balls, and was later named MVP of the game.
#3. Pedro Martinez (1999)
One of the greatest right-handed pitchers of all time, Pedro Martinez collected more than 200 wins and 3,000 strikeouts before getting inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015. He made eight All-Star appearances, won three Cy Young Awards and won eight ERA titles over his storied career.
The 1999 MLB All-Star Game was played at Fenway Park, which also honored the nominees for the All-Century Team. Martinez fanned five of the opening six batters in the first couple of innings and was named the MVP in his home stadium.
#4. J.D. Drew (2008)
J.D. Drew played for five teams across his 14-year major league career and batted .278 with 242 home runs. He won the World Series with the Red Sox in 2007 and made his only All-Star appearance the following year.
The 2008 MLB All-Star Game was held at Yankee Stadium, and it was the longest game in the history of the game, stretching out for 15 innings and over four hours in time. Drew came in as a reserve and hit a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh inning to win the All-Star Game MVP.
#5. Jarren Duran (2024)
Jarren Duran has established himself in the Red Sox lineup after hitting .295/.346/.482 in 2023 while also playing excellent defense at centerfield. This year, he earned his maiden All-Star call-up as he became the first major league player to record 100 hits, 10 triples, 10 home runs and 20 stolen bases before the midseason break.
On Tuesday, Duran joined the small list of Red Sox players to win the MVP in an All-Star game. He drove a game-winning two-run shot over the fence in the fifth inning to end up with the Ted Williams Award on the night.
