The New York Yankees and their fans are still reeling after missing out on Juan Soto in free agency. The superstar outfielder inked a 15-year, $765 million deal to join the cross-town New York Mets after reportedly rejecting the Yankees' 16-year, $760 million offer. It's safe to say that the club and their supporters are not thrilled at a future without the four-time All-Star.
It's clear why the Bronx Bombers fans are frustrated about losing Soto to the Mets after reaching the World Series for the first time since 2009. Although they will certainly pivot the offseason to address their roster needs, losing a player like Soto is never easy.
Some of that frustration was directed at one of the team's pitchers, Marcus Stroman, who took the time to congratulate Soto. Although this might simply be a tender moment between two former teammates and friends, fans called out the pitcher on social media, with some even calling for his removal from the team.
"Send him to Queens too," one fan said.
"That is his way to tell Soto, talk to them about me I want to go there too," another fan posted.
"Yankees better release Stro after this," one more fan added.
It will be interesting to see how things unfold for Stroman with the Yankees. The two-time All-Star struggled in his first season with the club, not appearing in a single postseason game. While it's unlikely that an MLB franchise would make a roster decision based on a player congratulating another, if the fans had their way, Stroman's tenure with the club would be over.
"Get this clown off the team," one fan shared.
"Twerking for your former teammate going to the crosstown rival, what happened to the game I love," another fan added.
"Yeah stroman knows he’s traded," one more posted.
Marcus Stroman posted a 10-9 record with a 4.31 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 154.2 innings last season. He signed a two-year, $37,000,000 deal with the club, which includes a $18,333,333 option for the 2026 season if he pitches over 140.0 innings. It remains to be seen whether the team wants him to reach that number or not.
New York Yankees will need to adjust their offseason plans after losing Juan Soto
Regardless of whether the Yankees' fans approve of Marcus Stroman's message or not, the reality of the matter is that the team will need to alter their approach in the offseason. The loss of Juan Soto will be difficult to replace. However, by keeping the money they would have allocated to Soto, they can land several impact players in free agency.
There are a number of intriguing free agents remaining on the open market that could help fill the void left by the four-time All-Star. Players such as Teoscar Hernandez, Alex Bregman, Paul Goldschmidt and Pete Alonso could all be alternative targets.
