Many might consider a 32-year-old like Jose Altuve to be entering the final years of his MLB career. Looking at his recent numbers, you might second-guess that notion.
Altuve continues to be one of the league's top performers. His personal statistics, matched with his long list of accolades, paints a picture of a very successful career.
The Houston Astros would no doubt like to retain the 2017 American League MVP for as long as possible. Not only is Altuve an elite player, he has become a fan favorite in Houston. Altuve has spent his entire 12-year career with the Astros. He is contracted through 2024, but could remain longer.
Houston's newly appointed general manager Dana Brown confirmed that the club is interested in extending Jose Altuve past his current deal:
"We think Altuve still has some gas left in the tank." Brown is currently at the club's spring training facility where he touched on the Altuve situation. He made his views on the subject clear, stating that both Altuve and Alex Bregman "should retire here."

Altuve seems to be getting better with age. The Venezuelan finished with a .300/.387/.533 slash line last season. He recorded 28 home runs and 57 RBIs.
Altuve finished with a batting average of .290 or better in eight different seasons. Over 1578 career games, he has an impressive .307 batting average and a .362 OBP.

The Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies to win their second championship in six seasons. They reached two more World Series in 2019 and 2021. Last season, the club reached a phenomenal sixth straight AL Championship Series. Altuve has been a key reason for the club's success in recent seasons.
Dana Brown would be wise to do everything in his power to hold on to Altuve. He has proven himself to be the leader of the club and the face of the franchise. The general manager has been busy since he started his new position. Locking up Jose Altuve to a long-term deal should be a priority on his list.
