A former college and minor league baseball player himself, Joe Espada hails from Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Notably, he spent his playing career in the minor leagues till 2005, post which, he changed gears and switched into a coaching career. His coaching career spanned from 2010-23 across three teams which included the Florida/Miami Marlins, the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros. Throughout this time, he has had varied roles as a coach including minor league infield coordinator, infield coordinator, third base coach and bench coach. As a coach, he achieved the World Series title with the Houston Astros in 2022. Post former manager Dusty Baker’s retirement in 2023, Joe Espada was promoted to be the new manager of the Houston Astros from the 2024 season.
Delving deeper into his playing career, he began with the Mobile Rams of the University of Mobile, Prichard, Alabama before being selected by the Oakland Athletics as the 45th overall selection in the 1996 Major League Baseball Draft but never played with them However, the Minnesota Twins later selected Espada from the Athletics in the 1998 Rule 5 draft but he didn't make the opening day roster for the Twins and was returned back to the Oaks. Espada later signed with the Florida Marlins in 2001 before being traded again, this time to the Colorado Rockies for Juan Acevedo in August 2001. Nonetheless, he still kept shifting bases as he played in the minor leagues of the Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization. He retired in 2005.
