“I made a mistake by taking Adderall” - When Chris Davis apologized to the Orioles organization and fans for his drug suspension

Chris Davis enjoyed a solid 13-year career in the big leagues, getting his start with the Texas Rangers, but spending most of his time with the Baltimore Orioles. He spent most of his time at first base but also had some reps at third base, designated hitter, and as an outfielder.

However, back in 2014, the slugger was suspended for 25 games after testing positive for amphetamine. He claimed to have tested positive due to his use of Adderall, for which he had a "therapeutic use exemption", although the exemption ran out at the time.

Davis did not appeal the decision and served his suspension, which lasted the final 17 regular season games and seven postseason games. He then apologized to his team and the fanbase for his absence via the New York Times' David Walstein.

"I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Orioles organization, and especially the fans," he said in a statement. "I made a mistake by taking Adderall. I had permission to use it in the past, but do not have a therapeutic use exemption this year. I accept my punishment and will begin serving my suspension immediately."

Davis' suspension was a big hit for the club. He had moved to third base to cover for Manny Machado after the slugger went down with a season-ending knee injury earlier in the year.

The timing of Chris Davis' suspension could not have come at a worse time for the Orioles. They were gearing up for the postseason and were already down Manny Machado.

It is tough going into the postseason knowing two important pieces of the offense would not be available. Manager Buck Showalter addressed the situation.

"I'm disappointed. I know Chris is too. It is what it is. So we're going to try to deal with it and move on. The timing is never good, but it's one of those challenges," said Showalter.

In the postseason, the Orioles were matched up with the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS. They took them down and advanced to the ALCS against the Kansas City Royals.

Unfortunately, they would struggle against the Royals. They were swept four games to none, ending their World Series aspirations. It was a disappointing end to what many fans thought was their shot to bring glory back to the city of Baltimore.
