The Houston Astros sent a clear message by signing former AL MVP Jose Abreu that they have no intention of slowing down this season. The signing gives the defending World Series champions one of the game's most powerful hitter.
Abreu has spent the previous 9 seasons with the Chicago White Sox. He debuted in Major League Baseball in 2014 after defecting from Cuba. He won Rookie of the Year in 2014 after hitting 36 home runs and driving in 107 runs.
Only this month did the Astros agree to a 5-year, $58.5 million contract. Fans are now wondering when they will see Jose Abreu in Astros orange for the first time.
The Houston Astros are opening their 2023 preseason against the New York Mets at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, their official Grapefruit League facility in Florida. Houston-based sports writer Brian McTaggart has confirmed that Abreu will indeed be in the lineup.
Prior to Abreu's arrival, Yuli Gurriel was the first baseman for the Astros. Despite appearing in more World Series games than any other first baseman since 2010, Gurriel exited the team earlier this year, becoming a free agent.
In the shortened 2020 season, Abreu hit 60 RBIs in 60 games and led the MLB in hits with 76. He was subsequently named the AL MVP, becoming the first Cuban in 32 years to do so.
Although the Houston Astros are heavily favored to win the AL West for the sixth time in the past seven seasons, they are not taking anything for granted. Jose Abreu is indeed an excellent addition to one of baseball's most stacked teams.
"Jose Abreu asked his impressions of the Astros coaching staff and how they do their jobs: "“It’s simple. I’m working with the champs.”" - @ Mark Berman
The Houston Astros are ready to see Jose Abreu bring his brand of electric offense to their team
While most of the other stars won't be making an appearance in the preseason opener, manager Dusty Baker knows that Abreu is one of the most highly anticipated stars this year. He also knows that it will be the 36-year-old's first time suiting up for a team other than the Chicago White Sox, and naturally, he wants to give Abreu a lot of time to make the necessary adjustments to be as strong as he possibly can for the upcoming season.
