Italy ready to face Japan in WBC
Italy reached the knockout rounds of the WBC after finishing second in Pool A behind Cuba. They won two group games and lost the other two, matching every other team in Pool A. However, the tiebreaker rules of the tournament meant that Cuba and Italy progressed.
Team Japan, meanwhile, were the clear winners of Pool B after winning all four of their games. They're yet to suffer a defeat and are among the favorites to win the title. They will go into the game confident of their chances of progressing to the semifinals.
Team Italy progressed to the quarterfinals of the WBC by the thinnest of margins. After all the games in Pool A were played, all five teams had identical 2-2 records.
However, the tiebreaker rules saw Cuba take first place while Italy finished in second place. Former Mets pitcher Matt Harvey and Royals shortstop Nicky Lopez were the MLB names that starred for Team Italy against the Netherlands in their final group game, resulting in their team's progression.
Team Japan, meanwhile, are led by two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. They have not set a foot wrong in this year's tournament. Along with established stars like Yu Darvish and Matasaka Yoshida, Japan has seen the rise of Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar, who has played a crucial role in their WBC campaign so far.
The first quarterfinal of the tournament between Australia and Cuba was a tight affair, which saw the Cubans edge a victory. The second game promises more of the same as the Italians look to produce a major upset against the formidable Japanese side.
