Fan-favorite Jose Iglesias is hitting the open market as an unrestricted free agent and should draw plenty interest from clubs heading into the 2025 campaign.
The 34-year-old infielder is coming off a solid season with the New York Mets. While he has never been a major source of home run power, his ability to get on base makes him a valuable piece to MLB lineups.
Last season with the Mets, Jose Iglesias posted an impressive .337 batting average, with four home runs and 26 RBIs. While his counting stats may not jump off the page, his on-base abilities coupled with his defensive versatilty make him an intriguing target for clubs this offseason.
Even if Iglesias needs to settle for a one-year deal and potentially a platoon role with his next club, he's the type of winning player who can make an impact during the long MLB season.
Three potential landing spots for Jose Iglesias in free agency
#1 New York Mets
A return to the New York Mets could be in the best interest of both parties. Iglesias is not only a popular player among fans because of his personality off the field, but he was a key role player for them in 2024.
While the Mets are in hot pursuit of top free agents like Juan Soto, Iglesias is a low-cost option who could help round out the roster as they push for a World Series title. Don't be surprised if he's back in Queens next season.
#2 San Diego Padres
Another National League contender who could use an infield veteran like Jose Iglesias are the San Diego Padres.
The Friars have many depth players who are also on the open market, like Ha-seong Kim, Donovan Solano and Nick Ahmed. Iglesias' ability to play all over the infield could also given Padres manager Mike Shildt some defensive flexibilty without sacrificing quality at-bats.
#3 Seattle Mariners
The number one area that the Seattle Mariners need to address this offseason is their infield.
The Mariners offense struggled for much of last season, finshing ahead of only the Chicago White Sox in terms of team batting average in 2024. While Jose Iglesias may not help in terms in home runs, his ability to get on base as well as defensive flexibilty make him an intriguing depth piece for Seattle.
