The league was first started as the National League (NL) that formed in 1876. This was followed by the formation of the American League (AL) in 1901 and then both these leagues decided to cooperate with each other by signing a National Agreement in 1903. However, both these leagues remained as separate legal entities until they merged in 2000 under the supervision of the Commissioner of Baseball. In between these years, the sport managed to remain popular throughout major events like the Black Sox Scandal, Great Depression and World War II.
