Angel Stadium, also called Angel Stadium of Anaheim is the official stadium of the Los Angeles Angels in Major League Baseball (MLB). Nicknamed as “The Big A”, it is based in Anaheim, California, United States. The stadium has been the home stadium of the Los Angeles Angels since 1966. It is also the fourth oldest MLB stadium.

Angel Stadium’s History? Angel Stadium Construction and Cost

The Los Angeles Angels initially played at stadiums like Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium from 1961 to 1964. However, they asked for a stadium of their own, which was approved after the team had impressive 1963 and 1964 MLB seasons. Unfortunately, the terms proposed by then Los Angeles Dodgers owners Walter O’Malley proved unfavorable for the team and they decided to relocate to Long Beach. Eventually, Anaheim in Orange County was chosen as the site for the construction of the new baseball stadium. The stadium was opened to the public April 6, 1996 and is located on a 160-acre site. The stadium was originally called the Anaheim Stadium due to the giant “A” structure beside the stadium. Edison International purchased the naing rights in 1998 and it was renamed as Edison International Field until 2004. After 2004, it was renamed back to Angel Stadium.

The Angel Stadium’s field was created on a scientific study of density of the air during the afternoon and night. Despite the dimensions of the field changing with time, the center field is the third shortest in MLB. The stadium was renovated in the 1970’s. This included an enlarged mezzanine and upper decks with elevated bleachers and more seats. The look of the stadium also changed into a trapzoidal. However, an earthquake on January 17, 1994 caused significant damage to the upper deck and the scoreboard of the stadium. The area was then rebuilt and the scoreboard was replaced. Once Walt Disney became the owners of the team in 1996, the modifications changed it into a stadium for only baseball games. Artificial cascading streams emerging from hills and geysers and real trees were added in the area overlooking the left center field.

The outfield section provided an excellent view of San Gabriel and the Santa Ana Mountains. Further modifications included the addition of new scoreboards, display board and outfield bleacher pavilions. The stadium became a mixture of green and sandstone colors. It has 78 suites for the fans. During the 2017 MLB season, a video display of 5,488 square feet on the left field and another video display of 9,500 square feet was added on the right field. The old scoreboard was also upgraded. The stadium also has an impressive display of fireworks before the start of a game, after a member of the Los Angeles Angels scores a home run and after they win a game. There are five concession zones which has merchandise shops, restaurants and bars. There is also the Hall of Fame Team shop on the terrace level where fans can purchase vintage merchandise related to the team.

The field surface has been created by using Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass. The left field is 347 feet and the left center field is 390 feet. The right field is 350 feet, the right center field is 370 feet and the shallow area of the right center field is 365 feet. The center field is 396 feet and the backstop is 60.5 feet.

Angel Stadium construction cost $24 million in 1966, which was equal to $166 million as of 2022. For 1997-199 renovations, $118 million were spent as of 1999, which was equal to $199 million as of 2022. The stadium was constructed by Noble W. Herzberg and Associates, Populous. Moreover, the renovations were done by Walt Disney Imagineering and Robert A. M. Stern.
