The New York Mets should be sellers at the deadline, and that probably means Luis Severino might be traded. They're not particularly good, which is a huge detriment when their division has two of the best teams in the entire league.
With an expiring contract and no position in the future, Severino should be swapped for any trade compensation the Mets can get. Either way, to kickstart a much-needed rebuild, Severino should be sent to a pitching-needy contender. Here are some teams that should be interested.
Teams that should call the Mets about Luis Severino
3) Houston Astros
The Houston Astros aren't much better than the New York Mets right now, but they are much better on paper and are in a weaker division. They've been bad and are still only 5.5 games back of a division leader (Seattle Mariners) that sits just four games over .500.
If any team can use Severino, it's the Astros. They're known for revitalizing veteran pitchers and they have experienced a rash of pitching injuries already.
2) Chicago Cubs
Boasting the 18th-best rotation in baseball, even with Shota Imanaga, is not ideal for a team that wants to make it to the postseason.
The Cubs were buyers at the deadline last year before they just narrowly missed out on the playoffs, and they might be forced to do that again to keep up with the Milwaukee Brewers. Imanaga and Justin Steele are good, but the Cubs could use some more depth in the form of Luis Severino.
1) Cleveland Guardians
The Cleveland Guardians have been one of baseball's biggest surprises and it's all thanks to their offense. The pitching staff has not been the same without Shane Bieber, who ranks 28th in baseball.
That's not going to happen when the playoffs arrive and it might be their undoing before then. This trade wouldn't be terribly expensive, and Severino is a former Cy Young finalist.
