Mark David Melancon is a veteran American professional baseball pitcher currently on the Arizona Diamondbacks roster of Major League Baseball. Born on March 28, 1985, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Melancon attended Wheat Ridge High School, where he played baseball and basketball. Melancon was initially drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 30th round of the 2003 MLB draft. He declined the offer so that he could attend the University of Arizona.
He was then drafted by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the 2006 MLB draft and made his major league debut with them in 2009. He has since played for seven different teams; the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, and San Diego Padres. Melancon has also established himself as one of the most consistent closers in baseball. He has led the National League in saves twice (2015, 2021) and has been an All-Star four times (2013, 2015, 2016, 2021).
