If Matt Carpenter were to retire today, he could look back on his career fondly; however, the 39-year-old has expressed interest in returning for a 15th MLB season. A three-time All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner, Carpenter's best years might be behind him, but even in a smaller role, he could be an effective depth piece.

Last season for the St. Louis Cardinals, Matt Carpenter posted a .234 batting average with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 59 games. It will be interesting to see how the offseason plays out for him as he has expressed his willingness to accept a part-time role with whichever club he signs with.

While his numbers in 2023 and 2024 may leave something to be desired, he enjoyed a career renaissance with the New York Yankees in 2022. That season, Carpenter racked up 15 homers in 47 games, which shows that he still has some juice in his bat, which could help him draw interest in free agency.

Here's a look at 3 potential landing spots for Matt Carpenter in free agency

#1 - St. Louis Cardinals

A return to the St. Louis Cardinals would make the most sense for both parties. While the Cards are reportedly looking to potentially move some of their veterans such as Nolan Arenado, they could use an affordable depth piece off the bench like Matt Carpenter.

In recent years, the St. Louis Cardinals have done a good job at bringing back and honoring some of their former superstars ahead of their retirements. Albert Pujols, Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina are among the club icons who wrapped up their careers with the team. Carpenter could be the next one in line.

#2 - Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are another club that could use an affordable spark plug off the bench. They struggled to produce much on offense through the majority of the year, especially during the postseason. While Carpenter may no longer be the double-digit home run hitter that he was when he was younger, he could provide the Tigers with some juice in a depth role in 2025.

#3 - New York Yankees

Sometimes lightning can strike twice. The New York Yankees will be one of the most interesting teams to keep an eye on this offseason. While they have been linked to superstar free agents such as Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, Carpenter could be a low-cost option and versatile defender for the club.

He may not be the biggest signing; however, Carpenter could prove to be a valuable addition for the team, especially if he can flash back to the 2022 level he enjoyed with the club. The Yankees may need to get creative with their salaries in 2025 and Carpenter could likely be signed on an incredibly team-friendly deal.
