Kenneth Merrill Kelly was born in Houston, Texas, on October 14, 1988, and is a Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks. On April 1, 2019, he made his MLB debut. Merrill previously played for the KBO League's SK Wyverns.
Merrill studied at Lake Forest Elementary School from third to eighth grade. He played on the school's baseball team while attending Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 37th round of the 2007 MLB draft, but he turned down the deal and joined Yavapai College. Then, in 2010, he was transferred to Arizona State University and played for the Sun Devils.
Merrill started the 2020 season in the rotation until being shut down on September 1 due to a shoulder ailment after 5 starts. He returned to the Diamondbacks in 2021 and pitched in 27 games for a 7-11 record on a team that lost 110 games. Merrill signed a two-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 1, 2022. He was also named National League Player of the period from July 25 to July 31, 2022.
Talking about his international career, On October 6, 2022, Merrill declared that he would play for the United States national baseball team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He started for the United States in the championship game versus Japan and was credited with the loss.
