Bernie Brewer

The Milwaukee Brewers are a professional baseball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the National League (NL) Central Division. Established in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots, the team relocated to Milwaukee in 1970 and embraced the name "Brewers," honoring the city’s rich brewing history.

Originally part of the American League (AL), the Brewers switched to the National League in 1998. Their home stadium is American Family Field, previously known as Miller Park. The Brewers have had multiple playoff appearances and won several division titles, including an AL Pennant in 1982. They are among the five current MLB teams that have not yet won a World Series. Additionally, the Brewers are recognized as the oldest MLB franchise yet to claim a championship title, sharing this status with the San Diego Padres, and they currently have the second-longest championship drought in the league at 55 seasons, trailing only the Cleveland Guardians.

Who is the mascot for the Milwaukee Brewers?

The Milwaukee Brewers' mascot is Bernie Brewer, a jolly figure clad in traditional brewer attire, featuring a mustache, lederhosen, and a hat. He has gained fame for his enthusiastic celebrations of the Brewers' home runs by sliding down a slide in the outfield at American Family Field.

Bernie Brewer History

Bernie Brewer has been the official mascot of the Milwaukee Brewers since 1973 and has a rich history connected to the team. The character originated as a tribute to a real fan named Milt Mason, who, in 1970, spent 40 days on top of the Brewers’ scoreboard in a trailer to encourage fans to attend games. When the Brewers finally drew 40,000 fans to a game, Milt slid down a rope to the field, marking the beginning of the Bernie Brewer tradition.

The mascot made his official debut in 1973, characterized as a man sporting a prominent mustache and dressed in traditional brewer attire that included lederhosen and a yellow beer mug. Initially, he resided in “Bernie’s Chalet,” located above the left-field bleachers at Milwaukee County Stadium. To celebrate Brewers' home runs and victories, Bernie would slide down into a large mug of beer, adding a fun element to the games.

In 1984, Bernie Brewer was retired when the Brewers relocated his chalet out of the stadium. Yet, in response to popularity, Bernie made a remarkable comeback in 1993 and has served as the team’s mascot ever since. When the Brewers transitioned to Miller Park (now American Family Field) in 2001, Bernie received a new slide situated in the left-center field.
