What is the name of Minnesota Twins Stadium?
Target Field is the official stadium for the Minnesota Twins in Major League Baseball (MLB) as per the MLB official site. It is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Target Field’s History/ Target Field Construction and Cost
The construction of the Target Field had a long backstory in the history of the Minnesota Twins. Carl Pohlad, the owner of the team in 1994 wanted to build a new baseball stadium as he felt that the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome was no longer providing satisfactory entertainment from the games. He wished for retractable roof stadiums twice in 1994 and 1997 but it was rejected both times. The team wanted to move to Greensboro in North Carolina but a referendum from there rejected this step too as per Baseball in Stadiums. Despite the backing of the mayor, the plans for a new stadium failed in 1999. It was only in early 2000 that several businessmen offered the Rapid Park in downtown Minneapolis as the location for a potential new baseball stadium. The land was near the historic Warehouse district. Despite many controversies and disputes, the construction work for the new stadium started on May 21, 2007. In 2008, it was named Target Field and was opened to the public with the first game on April 12, 2010.
The stadium is notable for a more modern design to attract the new generation of baseball fans. Despite requests for a retractable roof, it, however, did not get it. Nevertheless, the stadium uses spatial connections both indoors and outdoors. In 2008, they upgraded the stadium with warming shelters to protect the fans from extreme cold weather. Moreover, they inaugurated the illuminating Twin Towers in 2011 and provided free wi-fi to the fans. They also added the 4th largest scoreboard in MLB in the stadium. And the largest canopy suited for the fans.
The field in the stadium is made up of Kentucky Bluegrass. The left field is 339 feet while the left center field is 377 feet. The right field is 328 feet and the right center field is 367 feet. The right corner of the center field is 407 feet and the left corner of the center field is 411 feet.
Major features of the stadium include the only bonfire area in all of MLB stadiums. It is located on the popular left-field Budweiser roof deck, which is also a standing area. Target Plaza is another attraction and includes statutes of former players of the Minnesota Twins There is a large “Golden Gove” 160 meters away from the home plate which is a tribute to all Golden Glove winners from the team. The home plate of the stadium was actually dug up from the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in 2009 after the last game there and relocated to the new stadium. The Town Ball Tavern is notable for its Juicy Lucy burgers. There is also the Hrbek Bar and pub (named after Kent Hrbek) near the main concourse of the home plate. Finally, the Bat & Barrel Restaurant and State Fair Food stands are places to get a variety of foods.
The construction of the stadium cost $555 million in 2010. Another $23 million was spent on upgrading the stadium in 2008. It was constructed by Populous and Hammel, Green, and Abrahamson (HGA).
