MLB fans stunned that San Diego Padres continue to gear up for a World Series by signing former Red Sox pitcher Michael Wacha: "Padres doin all this"

After a stunning run to the NLCS, the San Diego Padres have been impressively aggressive this offseason. At every turn, they're adding a new piece to fully complement their roster and give them another shot at a World Series berth.

The latest move the Padres have made is signing former Boston Red Sox pitcher Michael Wacha. The deal is pending a physical (which means a lot this offseason), but the Padres have added another important depth piece.

MLB reporter Ken Rosenthal tweeted:

"Free-agent right-hander Michael Wacha in agreement with Padres, pending physical, sources tell The Athletic."

The Padres have been one of the biggest spenders during free agency, which effectively ended a while ago. There are still free agents out there, but most teams have signed who they're going to sign.

Not the Padres, though, who continue to surprise MLB fans by being absurdly aggressive on the market. Many fans believe the Padres are doing all of this in a vain endeavor.

Others are frustrated that they continue to add pieces while other teams refuse to spend any money.

While the name Michael Wacha doesn't exactly strike fear into opposing hitters, he had a very solid year for the Red Sox last year. He recorded a 1.5 fWAR and had a 3.32 ERA.

The Padres didn't need top-end starters, anyway. They have Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove atop their rotation, so they really only needed depth and Wacha does more than provide that.

How busy have the San Diego Padres been this offseason?

The San Diego Padres were already true contenders, but they may now be the National League favorites. The New York Mets arguably went bigger this offseason, but the Padres did well.

They signed shortstop Xander Bogaerts. They also signed slugger Matt Carpenter and added Wacha and veteran DH Nelson Cruz to the mix.

Combine those additions with the return of Fernando Tatis Jr. and a full season with Juan Soto, and one can see the Padres returning to the NLCS at the least. They will be a scary team in 2023.
