With the second half of Major League Baseball in full swing, several teams are dealing with injuries. Here are the major updates from around the ballparks.
#1, Anthony Rendon set to return against Yankees
Los Angeles Angels veteran Anthony Rendon, reportedly sidelined due to lower back inflammation since Jul. 16, shall return against the New York Yankees on Tuesday. The infielder featured in 14 games for the Angels this season before getting injured for over two months.
Rendon has a .225 batting average this season. He is expected to throw ground balls to get back into shape for his infield work. As noted by the Angels organization, he might not be in the leadoff position right after his return. The team is expected to let him settle in after the 10-day Injury List stint.
#2, Lance McCullers set to miss MLB action for second straight year
Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers was announced shut down for the rest of the season. The starter was nursing an injury in his right flexor tendon. He underwent surgery in Jun. 2023 and was expected to return toward the end of the season. He hasn't pitched in the majors since Game 3 of the 2022 World Series where he gave away five runs during his outing.
Manager Joe Espada said there was no structural damage to his elbow and no particular reason was given for his shutdown.
#3, Rangers lose Jacob Latz to the IL
Texas Rangers reported bullpen Jacob Latz had to be placed on the 15-day IL due to left forearm tightness. The left-hander has pitched a career-high 43.2 innings this season with a 2-3 record and a 3.71 ERA.
The defending champions were already dealing with several injuries to their pitchers. That included Max Scherzer, who had right shoulder soreness and had to be placed on the IL on Friday. Latz's injury Brock Burke to be called up from the Triple-A.
