MLB insider shares insights on possible Dodgers signing for Shohei Ohtani

To say that Shohei Ohtani's team, the Los Angeles Angels, have a complicated relationship with him would be an understatement. Pundits are already saying that the Japanese sensation could draw offers of up to $500 million should he choose to shop around.

Since coming over to the MLB in 2018, Shohei Ohtani has proven himself to be one of the most unique players ever. The first ever player to garner 100 or more strikeouts while hitting over 100 RBIs. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2018 and the AL MVP in 2021.

But the Angels have never been able to pin him down on a long-term deal. Ohtani has only made $38.5 million in the past three seasons. It is thought that Ohtani, who signed a one-year deal worth $30 million earlier this winter, is holding out for a truly gigantic contract offer next season.

One of the teams believed to be making a big play for Ohtani is the Los Angeles Dodgers. Writer Robert Murray of Fansided said new Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman is eyeing Ohtani in a recent piece.

Murray pointed to the Dodgers' front office being relatively quiet this year as evidence that they are saving up reserves to make Shohei Ohtani an offer that he can't refuse.

Murray also pointed out just how stacked the Dodgers rotation already is without Ohtani. Murray said:

"The Dodgers roster is already loaded. Just imagine it with Ohtani."

Recent performances from the Los Angeles Angels have further soured Ohtani's time with the organization. Ohtani suffered with his team through their worst losing streak in franchise history last summer, and together they swallowed a third-place divisional finish.

Despite having Ohtani and Mike Trout, who are some of the best players in the world, the Angels have not made the playoffs since 2014. With the Houston Astros looking as ready as ever to defend their title, the AL West will be as competitive as ever in 2023.

Shohei Ohtani could very well be the biggest signing in history

Aaron Judge and Justin Verlander both made history this offseason with record-breaking deals, but Ohtani's contract could blow both of them right out of the water. Ohtani is worth a lot of money, but he will need to go to a wealthy team like the Dodgers to get it.
