Mexico beats star-studded Team USA
Team Mexico defeated star-studded Team USA with on Sunday at Chase Field in Phoenix with the help of Joey Meneses, who hit two home runs. The US was the home team, but the crowd in the stands was predominantly pro-Mexico, adding to the rivalry.
After Meneses' second homer, he flipped his bat, which was a blow to the US team's hopes of winning. This loss does not mean the end of the US' campaign, but they need to win against Canada and Colombia to advance to the next stage.
Meneses' performance was impressive, and his passion for the game helped bring the country to its feet. Mexico will play Great Britain next while the US will face a tough Canada team.
Australia: First team to qualify to the WBC quarter finals
Australia beat the Czech Republic 8-3 in the World Baseball Classic, making it through to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. Both teams relied heavily on their veteran stars, many of whom work full-time jobs.
Czech Republic pitcher Martin Schneider was crucial in the game, pitching 5 1/3 innings and only giving up one run. However, Australia's Logan Wade and reigning ABL MVP Alex Hall helped break the game open with a two-run double and a two-run triple, respectively.
Australia finished their pool play with a 3-1 record and will play Cuba in the quarterfinals.
New York Yankees’ Anthony Volpe puts up impressive performance against the Red Sox in MLB Spring Training
New York Yankees shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe is impressing in spring training and strengthening his case for a place on the Opening Day roster. Volpe hit an opposite-field double, then a homer that cleared the Boston bullpen as the Yankees played out a 3-3 Grapefruit League tie against the Red Sox.
In nine spring games, the 21-year-old is batting .320 with three doubles, two homers, four walks and three stolen bases. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Volpe is capable of being a big-league shortstop and is likely to have a long MLB career.
Team Korea sets 22 runs record in the World Baseball Classic
Team Korea crushed China 22-2 in a historic mercy-rule victory in the final game of Pool B at the Tokyo Dome earlier today. The 22 runs broke the previous World Baseball Classic record of 18 held jointly by Japan and Canada.
Ha-Seong Kim hit his third homer in two days to cap off a record-breaking performance. Kunwoo Park hit Korea’s second grand slam in as many innings. Korea knew that it had no chance of advancing to the quarter-finals, so the victory was only for pride.
Despite China not winning a game in the tournament, manager Dean Treanor sees reason to be hopeful for the program’s future.
