Tuesday marked a week since the 94th MLB All-Star Game, and teams are again back in their hunt, aspiring for a better second half and claiming their seats in the postseason. The July 30 MLB trade deadline isn't far away, as teams will see this as the final opportunity to assemble themselves for a deep run in the playoffs.
Tuesday also marked three important games centered around two players and one franchise. Let's see what has unfolded since:
1) Yankees slump continues, loses 3-2 against Mets
The NY Yankees haven't been great post-All-Star break, with them first splitting the four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays and now dropping the first game of the Subway Series against the NY Mets.
While Luis Gil and the relievers held up their end of the bargain, throwing five innings for only one run, the hitters came up short against Jose Quintana and the Mets bullpen. A solo shot by Gleyber Torres and an RBI from Alex Verdugo were the only opportunities.
With the loss, the Yankees dropped to 60-43, now trailing 1.5 games behind the first-place Baltimore Orioles in the AL East.
2) Dodgers win their 5th straight; Shohei Ohtani drives in three runs
On the other side of the coast, the LA Dodgers extended their winning streak to five games after their 5-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.
Leadoff man Shohei Ohtani led the offense from the front, contributing three RBIs on two hits. Gavin Lux drove in the other two as the Dodgers gained an early 4-1 advantage against Giants ace Jordan Hicks.
Landon Knack, who started for LA, also did well, throwing five innings for only one run as the Dodgers cruised to 61-41.
3) Lance Lynn becomes the 6th active MLB pitcher to reach 2,000 Ks
St. Louis Cardinals veteran hurler Lance Lynn registered his name in history, becoming the 89th overall pitcher and sixth active to reach 2,000 strikeouts as he punched out two hitters in Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He achieved the milestone after striking out Jared Triolo to end the fourth inning. Moreover, St. Louis landed rookie sensation Paul Skenes his first loss of the season, as the Cardinals won the game 2-1.
