The San Francisco Giants are fresh off trading Austin Slater to the Cincinnati Reds for left-handed reliever Alex Young and cash. The Giants (44-47), who are 3.5 games behind for the Wild Card spot in the NL, could still make major moves before the July 30 trade deadline.
One thing is certain: the Giants won't be hesitant to cut ties with franchise veterans or big names as they build a competitive team in the future, one that could withstand the Dodgers' dominance in the NL West.
3 players Giants could ship out ahead of July 30 deadline
3) Matt Chapman
Third baseman Matt Chapman signed a three-year, $54 million contract with opt-outs in place after the first and second seasons. Given Chapman wanted a more lucrative contract this past offseason, his Giants tenure may well be until this year only.
He can be viewed as a tradeable asset, as he is having a good year, and trading him off to teams in need of an established third baseman could be a better option to consider.
2) Michael Conforto
If anything the Austin Slater trade suggests, this one shouldn't be a surprise if it materializes. The Giants have a reason to trade off the 31-year-old outfielder, given that he is on an expiring contract and would hit free agency at the end of this season.
Conforto signed a two-year, $36 million deal ahead of the 2023 season and is having a slightly better campaign than last year. This should make him an enticing option for teams looking to call up the Giants. The only downside to this trade would be his $18 million salary, which the Giants may have to take some part of before they ship him out.
1) Taylor Rogers
Left-handed reliever who could pitch high-leverage innings is the perfect medication for teams such as the Yankees and the Astros. Taylor Rogers perfectly sits in that frame and the Giants could make him available to see a line of opportunities come to them. However, this move will only take place if the Giants believe they are not in a good position to make a deep run in the postseason.
Rogers still has a year left on his contract before he hits free agency after next season.
