The Baltimore Orioles lead the American League East at the All-Star break and are poised to win the hotly contested division for the second year in a row. They are ahead of the New York Yankees by just one game but with 70 games left, they have several gaps they need to fix before the trade deadline.
The starting rotation has been somewhat of a concern for Brandon Hyde and his support staff. Corbin Burnes' addition to the rotation was way more important than anyone could have imagined as the ace made his way to the American League All-Star starter position. But the O's were dealt a blow as Kyle Bradish has had weeks off due to injury.
Apart from Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez has fared well, but behind the two the Orioles have looked for short-term solutions with the likes of Albert Suarez, Cole Irvin and prospect call-up Cade Povich. Baltimore is in dire need of a few starters to fortify the rotation. To do that, it will have to let go of a few key names.
#1 Kyle Stowers
The Orioles have one of the best farm systems in the league, but as much as that helps their organization, it also creates the problem of having too many options for similar positions. Kyle Stowers' situation is the perfect example.
After making his way up from Triple-A, Stowers has found himself mostly behind Colton Cowser and Heston Kjerstad in the lineup. There has been interest from the White Sox, and it is highly likely that Stowers will be traded away to bring in Garrett Crochet.
#2 Connor Norby
Another one of the Orioles' prospects churning up some unreal numbers in the prospect leagues is Connor Norby. The second baseman and makeshift outfielder hit 21 home runs and 92 RBIs in 138 games last season, yet found most of the other prospects like Jackson Holliday getting the nod for the majors.
Although he had a brief four-game stint in the MLB, he managed only .214 before being optioned back down to the Triple-A. With 2B locked in Jorge Mateo and Ramon Urias, it is unlikely Norby is in the O's' plans.
#3 Jordan Westburg
Even though signs show that Baltimore is likely to trade some of the ordinary at-bats like Colton Cowser, it will need a strong name to leverage at the trade table. One of the names popping up is Jordan Westburg who is having a strong season with a .271 average and an All-Star nod. With Tarik Skubal closely linked to the AL East leaders, they might consider giving up Westburg for a potent arm.
