Teams have been busy making moves all day Tuesday before the MLB trade deadline passes. Clubs want either to bolster their rosters for the long road ahead or acquire prospects for the future.
It has been a hectic week for teams across the league as dozens of deals have been completed in anticipation of the trade deadline. This trend continued on July 30 as a number of notable deals were made official. Here's a look at some big moves that took place on Tuesday afternoon:
MLB Trade Deadline roundup for Tuesday, July 30
#1. Paul Blackburn heads to the Mets
The first of two trade deadline moves for the New York Mets on this list sees the club bring in veteran pitcher Paul Blackburn from the Oakland Athletics. In exchange for the 30-year-old, the Mets sent minor league pitcher Kade Morris to the A's. Blackburn could become an important piece for the Mets as they push for the postseason.
"We've acquired RHP Paul Blackburn from Oakland in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Kade Morris. Welcome to New York, Paul!" - The New York Mets tweeted.
#2. Bryan De La Cruz to the Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates pulled off a major move this afternoon by landing Bryan De La Cruz from the Miami Marlins. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Pirates sent Jun-Seok Shim and Garret Forrester in exchange for the talented outfielder. The Pirates have been looking to bolster their outfield before the trade deadline, and this deal certainly accomplishes that goal.
#3. Trevor Richards moves to Minnesota
The Toronto Blue Jays' send-off continued on Tuesday afternoon as the club traded veteran pitcher Trevor Richards to the Minnesota Twins for minor leaguer Jay Harry. An unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, Richards could end up as a valuable rental as the Twins look to make a deep postseason run.
#4. Tanner Scott joins the Padres
Tanner Scott was one of the most sought-after relief pitchers heading toward the trade deadline. While a number of contenders have been looking to acquire Scott, ultimately it was the San Diego Padres who acquired his services. That being said, he did not come cheap as the Friars gave up their 2nd, 4th, 5th and 24th-ranked prospects to facilitate that deal.
"BREAKING: The San Diego Padres are finalizing a deal to acquire closer Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins, sources tell ESPN. Still pending medical review," JeffPassan reported.
#5. Tyler Zuber to the Mets
The Tampa Bay Rays sent reliever Tyler Zuber to the New York Mets in exchange for minor-league pitcher Paul Gervase. Although Zuber has seen limited MLB action in the past few years, he joins a newly revamped Mets bullpen that landed the likes of Phil Maton before the trade deadline.
