As the 2024 MLB trade deadline fast approaches teams have started amping their interest in potential targets to solidify their roster post the All-Star break. One name that has caught everyone by surprise is the San Francisco Giants ace Blake Snell. The reigning Cy Young Winner was a late mover in the free agency earlier this year when he signed a two-year, $62 million deal deep into spring training.
Snell endured a rough time in San Francisco with injuries keeping him out of action for much of the first half of the season. However, the veteran ace has found his Cy-Young winning form at the found over the last few starts and is looking like his former self.
Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reported on Thursday that the former San Diego Padres ace in drawing "significant interest" from teams with the trade deadline approaching.
3 teams that can land the All-Star pitcher before the trade deadline
#1. St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals have been rumored to be on the trail of the 32-year-old pitcher even before reports came out of Snell's availability ahead of the trade deadline.
The Cardinals have relatively flown under the radar this season and could be surprise packages if they make it to the postseason. They are sitting six games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central and could make a strong case for the pennant if they add Snell to the mix.
#2. Houston Astros
The Houston Astros' remarkable run of making the postseason in the last few seasons came under threat after a record-breakingly bad start to the 2024 season. While the poor form of the star sluggers was one of the major factors behind the slump, injuries to starters Framber Valdez and Justin Verlander among several others significantly handicapped the team.
Although the Astros have turned things around since mid-June and are leading the American League West, the addition of Blake Snell will provide a much-needed respite to the rotation.
#3. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers sit pretty at the top of the National League West after making a big splash in the offseason on superstar Shohei Ohtani. They also added crucial rotation pieces by acquiring Tyler Glasnow and Ohtani's compatriot, Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
However, injury concerns to the two pitchers, followed by Walker Buehler's indifferent return from a two-year-long hiatus have raised a few question marks over the arms at the Dodgers' disposal.
Although the team welcomed back former NL MVP Clayton Kershaw in their win over the Giants on Thursday, the veteran ace will need some cover when the team makes the postseason, which they seem poised to do.
The addition of Blake Snell might seem tough since the Giants would be reluctant to part ways with their ace to their division rivals, but it comes down to Snell's hefty salary, the Dodgers won't shy away from making a splash at the trade deadline.
