The start of the 2023 MLB season is just around the corner, and many baseball fans are wondering what the best options for streaming games are. While we’re all familiar with more traditional methods (MLB.tv, FuboTV, cable, etc), what are some ways to catch games for free?
MLB.tv Free Game of the Day
The streaming platform offers one free game every day for its users. All you have to do is download the app and create an account. Games offered for free by MLB.tv vary every day and will generally stream all 30 teams throughout the season. This is an easy way for people on a budget to enjoy baseball this season.
MLB Game of the Week: Youtube
For the third straight season, MLB.tv has partnered with video-streaming platform YouTube for a free game every week. Games generally stream in the afternoon on weekdays, but the days vary from week to week. This is a great way for fans to catch regular baseball games for free. Logging in to YouTube is free, and viewers do not have to create an account in order to watch the games. YouTube can be accessed through mobile apps, TV apps and web browsers.
T-Mobile MLB.tv subscription
This option is not "free", per se, but some T-Mobile users are granted an MLB subscription that is included in the service provider’s plan. If you are a T-Mobile user, you can check if you’re eligible for this benefit by contacting the company and activating your subscription at no extra cost.
TuneIn Radio
Online radio app TuneIn Radio has access to thousands of radio stations all around the globe. Some of these local stations broadcast baseball games daily. All you have to do is research which local stations transmit your favorite teams' games and access them via a mobile app or web browser. This is a completely free way to access every MLB game during the season. However, a little bit of research will be necessary in order to find out which stations to tune in to listen to your favorite games for free.
Local TV broadcast
If you happen to have an HD TV antena at home, some local broadcast stations can be watched for free. However, this doesn’t apply to every market or city, since the TV rights for many teams may vary. But if you happen to live in an area where the local team is broadcast through local TV, then a cable subscription won’t be necessary in order to catch your region’s baseball team.
While accessing every MLB game of the regular season might be tougher, there are plenty of options for baseball fans on a budget to catch games for free. The easiest way to access most, if not all games, would be via online radio. However, for some fans, it might be harder not to watch the games. Another option, which is not free, but can be very cheap for fans, is to subscribe to single-team streaming on MLB.tv, just make sure to research local TV blackouts before subscribing.
