Robinson Cano is an MLB legend, but now, in the twilight of his career, he is not the player he once was. He is currently playing for Team Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series, an international tournament. Cano is still playing his usual position of second place, but did not show his prowess on a game-altering play.
It has been a tough few years for Cano, who has bounced around the MLB, failing to find any amount of success. His 2022 was a regular season to forget, and after this play, his reputation has taken another hit. This is nothing new for players. Age and decline are simply unfortunate parts of sports.
Christopher Soto shared a clip of the blown play on Twitter.
Unfortunately for Robinson Cano, the Dominican Republic failed to recapture the lead and end up losing to Mexico.
In 2022, Cano played for the New York Mets, San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves. He wound up starting in only 33 big league games all year, and his numbers were nothing to write home about. His batting average of .150 and WAR of minus-1.5 made him a liability, not an asset. This is a rather steep decline for a player with eight All-Star selections to his name.
Robinson Cano will always be remembered as a New York Yankees legend, but it will be hard to forget his final years. At his peak, he was one of the best infielders and sluggers in the game. Now, he simply isn't at the big league level in either category. There is a chance he can turn things around, but it seems unlikely.
This is one of those defensive errors that doesn't really have an easy explanation. If it were any player other than Cano, it likely wouldn't have generated the respose it did. Seeing a legend fall back down to Earth is a reminder that these superstars are human.
This error may not have happened in the MLB, but the MLB world certainly took notice of it.
Is Robinson Cano a future Hall of Famer?
Cano is very close to having all the prerequisities needed to be a first-ballot hall of famer. His eight All-Star selections, five Silver Slugger awards and two Gold Glove awards certainly put him in elite company. He is also a World Series champion.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame is an extremely exclusive club, but Cano has the resume needed to be enshrined in the hallowed halls.
