New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas may miss the entirety of the 2023 season due to surgery on his right pitching shoulder. Yankees manager Aaron Boone made the announcement on Tuesday.
Montas' right shoulder has been an ongoing issue. He was pulled from a start on July 3 of last season as a member of the Oakland Athletics, but those concerns did not stop the Yankees from trading for the hurler a month later.
Montas, who turns 30 in March, was 5-12 with a 4.05 ERA in 27 starts for Oakland and New York last season. He was already expected to miss the first month of this season due to ongoing inflammation in the shoulder.
The news of Montas' sudden and complete unavailability has New York Yankees fans up in arms on a number of fronts. First off, many fans question the timing of the surgery. If this was an ongoing issue, why wait until after pitchers and catchers have reported to Spring Training to go the surgery route?
Frankie Montas, whom the Yankees acquired along with reliever Lou Trivino for a batch of lesser prospects, has not exactly endeared himself to fans in the Big Apple. Wednesday's news only irritated Yankee Nation further.
New York Yankees fans tend to not be big fans of general manager Brian Cashman. The Montas news only exacerbated the harsh feelings that many of the Bronx faithful have towards their GM. But hey, he did sign Carlos Rodon.
As far as Oakland goes, it's just business as usual. But regardless of whether any of the players they got for Montas work out, for many fans, it's just another case of the Athletics fleecing the Yankees.
New York Yankees rotation could be just fine without Frankie Montas
Even with the loss of Frankie Montas, the New York Yankees' pitching staff looks to be fairly well off -- as long as they don't lose another starter. New York is solid to spectacular from the first through the fourth slots in their rotation: Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, and Nestor Cortes. Domingo German is currently penciled in as the fifth starter, according to Fangraphs.com.
