Jose Altuve has made it clear that he hopes to end his MLB career with the Houston Astros. The 2017 American League MVP has been instrumental in transforming the franchise into one of the league's premier organizations.
Altuve has emerged as the team's standout player since making his debut in 2011. He was named to the All-Star Game eight times and led the team to two World Series championships. The infielder has six Silver Slugger Awards, a Gold Glove Award, and a Hank Aaron Award.
While there is plenty of demand in the market for a player of Altuve's caliber, the 32-year-old has no desire to leave Houston:
"Hopefully...I can stay here for the rest of my career. Everybody knows it's not up to me. But [it's] something I would love to [do]"
Per a recent article in the Houston Chronicle, Altuve also stated that he hopes to play in the big leagues until he is 40.
Although he fractured his thumb during the World Baseball Classic, the Astros are keen to keep Altuve on the books. The club's newly-appointed GM Dana Brown recently stated that he hopes Altuve retires in Houston.
Jose Altuve has played his entire 12-year MLB career with the Houston Astros
Jose Altuve has spent his entire 12-year career with the Astros. In fact, he has been a part of the club since he was a 16-year-old undersized kid.
Altuve has an incredible lifetime slash line of .307/.362/.468. Over 1578 regular-season games, he has 192 home runs, 696 RBIs, 1935 hits, and 279 stolen bases.
"Dana Brown says he has made it clear to Alex Bregman, José Altuve and their agent Scott Boras 'these guys should retire here.'" - Mark Berman
It is a rarity in this day and age to see a player dedicate his entire career to a single organization.
Legendary shortstop Derek Jeter stuck with the New York Yankees throughout his 20-year career. Adam Wainwright is about to begin his eighteenth straight season with the St. Louis Cardinals. Clayton Kershaw has played his entire 15-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jose Altuve is a fan favorite in Houston and a leader in the clubhouse. With both parties keen to work out a deal, expect Altuve's next contract to be a big one that will keep him in Texas for years to come.
