The Boston Red Sox remain one of the contenders to sign Alex Bregman. The Gold Glove-winning 3B is playing the patient, waiting for all teams to play their cards on the table before he picks his destination.
As Chris Rose spoke on JM Baseball's "Baseball Today" podcast on Friday, the Red Sox are favorites to get Alex Bregman. He also stated that signing him to their team would reignite the heated rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees in some way. This had to do with the third baseman's time with the Houston Astros.
"I have him going to Boston. I just think that they've had such a good offseason and they haven't spent an exorbitant amount of money. The biggest move they made was trading for Garrett Crochet.
"I think they've spent somewhere between $50 and $60 million this offseason, so this is something that they can definitely do if they're serious about getting back and making the Yankees sweat it out a little bit more. I mean, how much fun would that be? You already have a faction of Yankee fans that can't stand a guy like Alex Bregman. If he now ends up in the arch-rival city...," Rose said. [10:15]
Yankees fans have a major dislike for players from the 2017 Astros team. The team had to face allegations of sign-stealing later when an investigation was conducted. Houston played New York in the 2017 postseason and beat them. After the sign-stealing scandal was confirmed, there has been anger in the minds of Yanks' faithful because they think they were hard done by Bregman and co.
Walker Buehler has asked Alex Bregman to sign with the Red Sox
Newly acquired free agent starter Walker Buehler has donned the cap for Boston even before Spring Training has started. The pitcher who signed a one-year $21.05 million with the Red Sox spoke to Bregman about possibly joining Boston. He said in his introductory press conference on Friday:
“I have certainly made a pitch all over the place for him to come to Boston,” Buehler said. “He and I have been buddies for a long time. We played on Team USA together, a little bit in college.”
The two are close friends outside of baseball and are co-owners of a racing horse named March of Time. A reunion at Boston will be likely if Bregman decides to play a different infield position. Rafael Devers is at the hot corner and as per the Red Sox, they are unwilling to move him.
