Fans on the internet sent cold vibes to the Pittsburgh Pirates after the 11-year-old who found Paul Skenes' 1/1 Rookie Debut Patch Autograph card (from Topps) on Friday decided to reject offers associated with it by pitcher's girlfriend Olivia Dunne and the organization in favor of selling it in auction.
According to Fanatics Collect, the individual will auction his card in the March Premier auction. The Pirates previously offered 30 years of Pirates season tickets, and a meet and greet with Skenes, among other things for anyone who gets their hands on the rare card of NL Rookie of the Year.
However, it seems the offer was not enticing enough for the individual to turn over his card.
This became a source for fans to crack jokes on the Pittsburgh Pirates, who haven't been competitive at all of late.
"Thank God having 30 years of Pirates season tickets sounds about as good as a life sentence in jail," one fan commented.
"That is one intelligent 11 yo," one fan added.
"This card is going to go for a pretty penny!" another wrote.
Some fans found things sketchy about the card.
"This ISNT just in though. You posted this yesterday and then deleted it. Why all the shadyness around this card??? Asking for A LOT of friends!!!" one fan wrote.
"How did they get graded and already back from PSA so quickly," another asked.
"@KenGoldin we need a recap on this and the shady business of cards right now!" another took a dig at Goldin Auction House.
Pittsburgh Pirates and Olivia Dunne doubled down on their offers for Paul Skenes' card
As soon as it was revealed that Paul Skenes' 1/1 Rookie Debut Patch Autograph card was found by an 11-year-old, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Olivia Dunne went to social media to double down on their offers in hopes of landing the card.
The Pirates, who offered the collector a package including season tickets, two autographed jerseys and other things, wrote:
"An 11-year-old collector just pulled the Paul Skenes 1/1 Debut Patch card! Our offer still stands... you know where to find us 🤝😏 "
Meanwhile, Olivia Dunne, who offered a spot in her suite to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates game in PNC Park, also doubled down on her offer.
"Omg someone found it!… my offer still stands👀," she wrote in her story.
However, it was only fair for the 11-year-old to rather auction it off than get enticed by this offer, given the card could fetch a good amount of money for them.
