"A slap-d*** prospect" - Blake Snell's controversial take on Xavier Edwards' move to Rays resurfaces following players' historic cycle achievement

Miami Marlins rookie Xavier Edwards notched up the maiden triple and home run of his short MLB career en route hitting for the cycle against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon. Edwards, who was once dubbed a "slap-d*** prospect" by current San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell, became only the second Marlins player to record the achievement.

Xavier Edwards went 4-4 during the game, scoring two runs and having one RBI, even though the Marlins lost 6-2 to the Brewers. He hit a home run off the opening pitch before hitting a double in the fifth inning and a triple in the seventh.

Edwards then got an infield single with two outs in the ninth inning to emulate Luis Arraez, who registered the first cycle for the Marlins in 2023.

Although he made his major league debut with the Marlins last year, Xavier Edwards was initially selected by the San Diego Padres as the 38th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. In 2019, the Padres traded him with two other players to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Tommy Pham and Jake Cronenworth.

At this time, Blake Snell was part of the Rays pitching staff as well as the reigning Cy Young Award winner in the American League. Snell was doing a live stream on Twitch when he learned about the trade involving Xavier Edwards and offered his candid response on air.

"We gave Pham up for Renfroe and a damn slap-d--- prospect?" Snell had said.

Later, Snell offered his apologies to Edwards, saying that he didn't mean to disrespect the youngster, and the misunderstanding with him has been cleared.

The Miami Marlins reached the postseason for just the fifth time last year but have taken a massive step backwards in 2024.

At present, the atmosphere around the organization is not a positive one, as the Marlins have a miserable 39-67 record. Nevertheless, the emergence of Xavier Edwards has provided some respite for fans.

The Marlins had acquired Edwards before the 2023 season and moved him to their Triple-A affiliate Jacksonville Jumbo Strip, where he batted .306/.427/.361 and took seven stolen bases. He made his MLB debut on May 2 and ended the year with a .295/.329/.333 from 30 games.

Edwards began the 2024 season on the IL before entering the lineup in early June. However, he only played three games for the Marlins before he was sidelined again.

The 24-year-old infielder returned at the start of this month and has been red hot since then. Before hitting the cycle, he had a .349\.434\.398 slashline with 134 OPS+ and eight stolen bases in 100 plate appearances.
