Looking ahead towards the 2025 MLB season, shortstop Corey Seager and pitcher Jacob deGrom are two Texas Rangers stars among the favorites for the AL MVP and the Cy Young.
Both players are coming off injuries and will look to start the new season on a positive note. However, looking at their competition for individual awards, K&C Masterpiece host Mike Bacsik believes that DeGrom has a better chance than Seager (8:19):
"I lean more towards Jacob deGrom. Which is scary, I get the injury history and how they're going to possibly protect his arm, which could be tough to rack up all of the numbers you need for a Cy Young. Let's look at the competition ... do you see that competition?"
"If he can stay pretty much healthy, people will be so exicted around baseball... like is this awesome that Jacob deGrom is healthy and doing great? He has that going for him.
"When I look at Corey Seager for MVP, I know Aaron Judge. He's always going to be tough to beat. After him, Bobby Witt, that's going to be tough. Gunnar Henderson's still around. I do think the competition for MVP is tougher to beat those those guys than it will be for Jacob deGrom to beat the guys in front of him. I do think Corey Seager would have won MVP if he didn't get hurt so much."
Corey Seager is a seasoned MLB star who has won two World Series titles, being named the series MVP on both occasions. Over the course of his decade-long career, the infielder has been a perennial in the MVP voting, but the title has eluded him due to the tough competition in the American League.
Meanwhile, Jacob deGrom has a good chance to land a Cy Young if he remains healthy through the year. Despite his injury stuggles, he's projected to be one of the frontrunners for the title.
Corey Seager ready to start Spring Training after two surgeries
Corey Seager saw his season end early last year due to a second hernia surgery of the year in September.
The 30-year-old missed Spring Training in 2024 after undergoing hernia surgery in January, only to have his season end early following an another one. Ahead of the team's annual awards dinner, Seager said:
“It’s a pretty normal offseason, which is nice. First time in a while. It’s been good to kind of get in the gym and get in shape again and just kind of be ready.”
Seager has slugged at least 30 home runs in his past three seasons, cementing his position as one of the team's core players. Having him back to his best will be a huge boost for the Texas Rangers as they aim for a successful 2025 MLB season.
