Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees would have expected a better performance from themselves in the first three games of the World Series. Facing defeat, captain Judge feels the team is still hopeful of positive results and become the first team to overturn a 3-0 World Series deficit.
On Monday night, the Yanks surrendered the first game in the Bronxl, losing 4-2. The offense lacked any potency, while starter Clarke Schmidt was chased out of the game early.
Freddie Freeman hit a two run homer for the Dodgers, while Mookie Betts and Enrique Hernandez hit RBI singles. The only real threat from New York came in the bottom of the ninth when Alex Verdugo hit a two-run homer of his own to half the Dodgers' lead, but it was too late.
As per records, there has been only one instance in history when a team taking a 3-0 lead has gone on to lose a seven-game series. The 2004 New York Yankees towards the end of their dynastic run were humbled by the Boston Red Sox who won four games back-to-back in the American League Championship Series.
In his post-game interview, Aaron Judge acknowledged the challenge of facing a star-studded team like the Dodgers. However, he also accepted that his team is not going to back down from a challenge and will give their best to keep the series alive.
"We're playing a good team over there. They've got a great ball club. We knew it was going to be a dog fight, so we gotta come out swinging. They came out two outs in the first, but we had good at-bats down the stretch. We can change everything with one game tomorrow," Judge said.
Aaron Judge accepts he's 'not doing his job'
As for his individual performance, Aaron Judge failed at the plate again, going 0-for-3 with one strikeout and a walk.
His postseason average dipped to .140 with a damaging .091 average in the three games in the Fall Classic. He acknowledged his failures and said that he has to lift his game.
"Yeah, definitely. You want to be getting the hits. You want to be doing your job, but I’m not doing my job right now. I've got to pick it up,” Judge said.
New York will have starter Luis Gil face off against the Dodgers' bullpen on Tuesday. In a must-win game, the offense will look to turn in a strong performance.
